MTÜ Mondo receives prestigious award at gala in Estonia

It was with great pride and joy that representatives from MTÜ Mondo (Egle Küngas, Head of the Environmental Program at Mondo and Kelli Eek, Communications Manager at Mondo) received the prestigious award during a glamorous gala in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The award was presented in the ‘Study Materials’ category of the ‘Keskkonnakäpp’ competition for environmentally oriented educational activities. The award is a well-deserved tribute to the successful work of introducing the Climate Call card game in Estonia.

Climate Minister Kristen Michal, who chaired the award ceremony at the gala, stressed the importance of promoting environmental awareness and habits already in childhood. MTÜ Mondo and Climate Call have worked together to adapt the game to Estonia and bring it to teachers and students across the country. The game has helped to create an open dialog on climate change and sustainability in Estonia’s education system.

The award is an important confirmation that the Climate Call card game is an effective educational tool that engages, sparks interest and spreads knowledge and awareness. Therefore, we are extremely proud that the educational material we have created has received such a great recognition!

A winning partnership: MTÜ Mondo and the Climate Call card game

MTÜ Mondo and Climate Call have been collaborating for several years and jointly developed the Estonian version of the Climate Call card game, “Kliimakool”. Mondo works to reduce global inequality by focusing on education, health, coping, environment and digital literacy in partner countries and in Estonia.

The collaboration has not only enabled the dissemination of the game to teachers and students in Estonia, but also promoted knowledge about climate change and sustainability throughout the country. The Climate Call card game has become a powerful tool in education by offering a playful and engaging way to introduce climate change in the classroom. The game has proved popular with both teachers and students and has created a platform for meaningful discussions and reflections.

Recycling and circular economy: other projects awarded in Tallinn

The Keskkonnakäpp competition in Tallinn highlighted not only the Climate Call card game, but also other inspiring projects that focused on issues such as recycling and circular economy. Schools and kindergartens also created their own gardens or transformed waste into new useful products.

Kliimakool: The Estonian version of the Climate Call card game

The Estonian version of the Climate Call card game – Kliimakool – works in the same way as the English game. Kliimakool is the result of close cooperation between the creators of the Climate Call card game and the Estonian educational organization MTÜ Mondo. Together we have adapted the game to the Estonian context and created a unique learning experience for students in Estonia.

Kliimakool has provided Estonian teachers with an engaging resource for teaching about climate change and sustainability. Playing the card game allows students to explore different aspects of climate change in a playful way while challenging them to reflect on their own actions and how they can influence the climate. Students also gain a better understanding of how their everyday choices and behaviors affect the climate. This in turn gives them the knowledge to make more informed decisions in the future. The strength of the game lies in using play and interactivity to inspire and engage young people.

The Climate Call card game: a powerful tool for climate education

The educational card game provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about climate change. By playing the game, students not only learn about climate impacts and challenges. They also reflect on their own actions and how they can contribute to a more sustainable future.

The Climate Call card game stimulates personal reflection and vibrant group discussions, allowing students to explore different aspects of the climate issue. Using card games as a pedagogical method makes learning fun and interactive, which contributes to increasing students’ learning. The Estonian version of Climate Call, Kliimakool, thus plays an important role in strengthening climate education in Estonia. By making the topic more accessible and interesting to students, the game helps to shape awareness of climate issues and inspire positive change.

Climate dialogue without climate anxiety: Climate Call creates an inclusive conversation space

The Climate Call card game is an excellent starting point for creating an open and constructive dialog around the climate issue. The playful and interactive nature of the game creates a relaxed environment that invites open and curious conversations where players can share their thoughts, ideas and reflections related to the climate without feeling guilty, judged or questioned.

One of the unique features of the Climate Call card game is that it focuses on the possibilities and agency of each individual. Instead of creating a sense of hopelessness or blame, the game encourages players to identify positive changes and inspire each other to act for a sustainable future.

The Climate Call card game offers a balance between knowledge, reflection and optimism. It helps create an atmosphere where everyone can participate and contribute with their unique perspectives and experiences. By fostering open conversations, the Climate Call card game becomes a valuable tool to raise awareness about the climate issue without amplifying anxiety or overwhelming emotions.

Research-based and educational: a reliable source of knowledge

To calculate the emission figures on the cards, we used a calculation model developed by researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. Most of the data used in the calculations are taken from scientific articles, reports from authorities and research institutes, and statistical databases. The calculation explanations on our website provide more information about the references we have used and the assumptions we have made. A selection of the most important sources can be found under ‘Reference list’.

In some cases, the calculations are based on qualified estimates and reasonable assumptions. All calculations are based on the most up-to-date data possible, and the plausibility of the calculated emissions has been ensured. The game was created to allow comparisons between the greenhouse gas emissions of different products and activities.

In general, only direct greenhouse gas emissions have been considered, excluding indirect emissions and other indirect impacts on the climate. This is because indirect effects are much more uncertain and difficult to estimate.

The emission figures on the cards should be considered approximate and comparable. This means that the orders of magnitude are correct, which is the most important thing for the cards to be compared with each other. However, the numbers should not be considered exact. This is because there is a wide range of possible values for several of the parameters on which the calculations are based (for example, the temperature of hot water, or how much fuel a car uses). It is also due to the fact that there are several uncertainties in the calculations on which the figures are based. This is because the global climate system is complex and it is not easy to estimate all the effects.

A playful and engaging approach: what makes Climate Call unique?

The Climate Call card game is characterized by its playful and engaging approach. It is a card game that not only offers a fun and interactive gaming experience, but also gives players a deeper understanding of the climate issue. Therefore, it is equally suitable as a board game, as a learning tool in schools.

By combining knowledge with entertainment, the Climate Call card game has created a unique learning experience. The game takes players on a journey through different aspects of the climate and challenges them to think about their own choices in everyday life. By playing the game, players gain an increased awareness of how their own choices and actions affect the climate.

What really makes the Climate Call card game unique is its ability to create open dialog and engaging discussions. The game serves as a platform for players to explore different perspectives and exchange ideas on climate change.

The Climate Call card game is more than just a card game. It is a tool that inspires action and change. By combining playfulness, knowledge and engagement, the game makes learning about climate change both interesting and meaningful. It is this unique approach that makes the Climate Call card game such a prominent resource in climate education.
